01 Health Canada Recalls Smoking in Mouth
The Canadian Department of Health issued a recall order on Friday, calling for the recall of more oral cigarettes, citing unauthorized sales in Canada. The health department stated that this recall involves 4 milligrams and 6 milligrams of XQS containing oral cigarettes. The mouth pack sold comes in various flavors, including blueberry mint, green mint, carbonated cola, and tropical flavors.
Earlier this week, Zyn cigarettes (opened on a new label) were recalled due to not being approved for sale in the country. The tobacco manufacturer stated in a statement to CTVNews.ca on Friday, "Zyn is not authorized to sell in Canada. The products in question are sold by unauthorized organizations."
The company also added, "Rothmans, Benson, and Hedges are working with law enforcement to curb illegal trade, and we support the government's efforts in this regard." The Canadian Department of Health states that consumers should check if their mouth smoke is affected and consult healthcare providers before discontinuing use or experiencing health problems.
02 Polish e-cigarettes to be banned from sale -2025
At a press conference on Monday, Health Minister Izabela Leszczyna announced that work on a ban on electronic cigarettes bill is underway, which will come into effect in early 2025. The bill was announced to come into effect in early summer. Holiday, but due to the need to implement EU directives, the work of the bill has been extended, which introduces the definition of heated tobacco products and prohibits the use of specialty spices in innovative heating products.
At present, there are three draft laws on the ministerial table - one implementing EU directives has been submitted for consultation, and two drafts regulate sales rules in a narrow and broad sense. As mentioned by the minister, one of these two projects will be submitted for consultation this weekend. As early as May, Minister Leshchina stated that introducing bans through regulations is a legislative process that takes several months and requires notification to the European Union that Poland cannot immediately introduce bans like the UK.
The results of the survey on student smoking and e-cigarette use conducted in December 2023 and January 2024 showed that 6 out of every 10 primary and secondary school students smoke or use nicotine products once a day or occasionally.
Poland has long banned the sale of tobacco products to minors. However, it did not bring the expected results of the aforementioned ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes law.
03 Tobacco giant Philip Morris will suspend online sales of oral cigarettes nationwide in the United States
Tobacco giant Philip Morris International (PM. N) announced on June 17th that it will suspend online sales of Swedish North American company ZYN.com nationwide due to Zyn's oral cigarette manufacturer responding to subpoenas from the District of Columbia (DC).
In 2022, Philip Morris acquired Swedish matches for $16 billion as the company aims to reduce its dependence on cigarettes in the context of increasingly strict regulations and consumers shifting towards tobacco and traditional cigarette substitutes.
The company stated that Swedish Match North America has received a subpoena from the Attorney General of Washington, D.C., requesting information on its compliance with the Washington D.C. 2022 ban on the sale of all flavored tobacco.
In October 2022, DC banned the sale of all flavored tobacco, including flavored synthetic nicotine products.
Philip Morris stated that it intends to comply with the requests of Washington, D.C., and is likely to take significant responsibility if there are adverse outcomes to this matter.
The company stated that preliminary investigations have shown that there is sales of flavored smoking products in Washington D.C., mainly related to certain online sales platforms and some independent retailers.
A spokesperson for Philip Morris told Reuters, "Swedish Match is conducting a comprehensive review of sales and supply chain arrangements in Washington D.C. and other regions of the United States that may implement taste bans, and suspending all sales on ZYN.com until the evaluation is completed."
Philip Morris has benefited from strong demand in the United States for its Zyn mouthpack cigarettes, and the company has stated that the product does not contain tobacco.
The company's first quarter results released in April showed that the shipment volume of Zyn cigarettes increased by nearly 80% compared to the same period last year. However, the company added on Monday that sales on ZYN.com "only account for a small portion of Zyn's national sales.".
Starting from September 8th, Philippine e-cigarette products require certification before they can be sold
According to government standards agencies, e-cigarette retailers, distributors, wholesalers, and traders are allowed to sell their remaining unverified inventory of e-cigarette products before September 7th.
Leah Ann Arella, Director of Standards Consistency at the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry's Philippine Bureau of Standards (DTI-BPS), said in a weekend radio interview, "This is a set deadline so that they can register the remaining inventory, because after this deadline, products without electronic cigarette product certification on the market will be seized by September 8th."
BPS officials explained that electronic cigarette products considered certified are those that have the manufacturer's PS license mark or the importer's import clearance (ICC) mark.
"For products that have obtained BPS certification, if the manufacturer has the PS certification mark, the manufacturer must obtain a PS license, and each manufacturer must have a unique license number. Importers must prove to ICC whether each batch of goods meets the requirements, otherwise they will no longer be able to inspect the goods unless they provide samples for inspection or testing, otherwise ICC labels must be issued to the products to ensure product quality," said Arera.
The final deadline for the inventory of electronic cigarette products is stipulated by the Departmental Administrative Order (DAO) 24-02. DAO 24-02 states: "Within 90 days after the effective date of this order, all retailers may sell the remaining inventory of vaporized nicotine and non nicotine products."
